For a lean digital company, Wio Essential would be my starting choice: no minimum balance, multi-currency accounts and a clear upgrade path when the team grows. I would choose NEO BIZ Pro instead if Mashreq's eligibility, payment routes or signing arrangements fit the company better. Prime becomes interesting when the business already keeps AED 50,000 in its operating account—not when it has to scrape that money together.
This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on account-opening test or a rating of support speed. Information was checked on 5 October 2026. The fee schedules linked below matter more than a screenshot of an old promotion.
Monthly fees and minimum balances
Wio's September 2026 schedule includes applicable VAT in the quoted fees. Mashreq's July 2026 schedule generally adds 5% VAT. The table normalises the monthly charge to include that VAT so that AED 99 is not misleadingly compared with another AED 99 on a different basis.
| Plan | Monthly charge, including VAT | Minimum average balance |
| Wio Essential | AED 99 | None |
| Wio Grow | AED 249 | None |
| NEO BIZ Lite | AED 210 | None |
| NEO BIZ Pro | AED 103.95 | None |
| NEO BIZ Pro Plus | AED 208.95 | None |
| NEO BIZ Prime | No maintenance fee; AED 210 fall-below fee where applicable | AED 50,000 |
Sources: Wio Business schedule of fees; NEO BIZ schedule of charges; NEO BIZ key facts, September 2026. These are recurring plan costs, not an all-inclusive cost of banking. Product availability and acceptance still need confirmation for your company.
My recommendation: do not move scarce working capital merely to avoid a fee. Prime is more interesting when the business naturally maintains the required average balance after payroll, supplier payments and tax reserves. One month-end screenshot of a healthy balance is not the same as satisfying an average-balance condition.
Account opening: check eligibility before comparing apps
Wio's onboarding guide asks for company and personal information, business documents and identity/ownership verification. Its advertised opening speed is not a promise of approval for an individual application. Prepare the business explanation and document pack before starting.
Mashreq's current key facts specify individual ownership rather than layered corporate structures, annual turnover up to AED 100 million and at least one UAE-resident partner or power-of-attorney holder, alongside other conditions and due diligence. It also distinguishes receiving an IBAN from completion of review and account activation.
If a holding company owns your startup, do not assume a self-service SME product accepts it. Ask both banks which product fits. The same applies to a non-resident ownership team, unusual trading activity or a business with counterparties in higher-risk jurisdictions.
Keep the licence, incorporation and ownership records, signing mandate, identity documents, address evidence and genuine business evidence ready. Respond consistently when asked about source of funds, countries of operation and expected transactions. Start with the company setup checklist if those documents are not ready; use the free-zone guide before buying a package that promises banking access.
AED payments and international transfers
Wio Essential includes ten local outward transfers monthly, then charges AED 1.05 each; Grow includes unlimited local outward transfers. Its SWIFT sending fee is AED 52.50 on Essential and AED 26.25 on Grow. Those numbers include applicable VAT but not every possible correspondent or beneficiary-bank charge. See Wio's fee schedule.
Mashreq's schedule lists local AED transfers as free. For international transfers or local non-AED transfers, it lists AED 40 for Lite, AED 25 for Prime, AED 50 for Pro and AED 25 for Pro Plus, before VAT and excluding correspondent-bank costs. Confirm any balance-linked waiver or reversal conditions for your chosen plan.
For cross-border work, compare the delivered amount as well as the sending fee. Ask for the debit currency, exchange rate, fee-sharing option, intermediary costs and amount the supplier should receive. A lower visible transfer charge can be outweighed by an unfavourable FX rate.
Currency checklist: Wio's current account key facts list AED, USD, EUR and GBP accounts. For NEO BIZ, confirm the foreign-currency accounts available to your company alongside AED. Do not assume the ability to send a currency means you can hold it or receive it through local account details. Ask each bank to confirm incoming-payment details and receiving charges for your exact currencies.
Two cost examples
A small consultancy: with eight local AED transfers a month and no international transfers, the plan-and-local-transfer subtotal is AED 99 for Wio Essential and AED 103.95 for NEO BIZ Pro. The AED 4.95 difference is unlikely to outweigh eligibility or a workflow that fits your company better. Cards, payroll, other services and FX are excluded.
A business paying six overseas suppliers: using the published Wio SWIFT fees, Essential costs AED 414 for the subscription plus six transfers; Grow costs AED 406.50. Grow becomes slightly cheaper on those two items at six transfers. This is arithmetic, not a forecast of the complete international-payment bill: correspondent fees, FX and any alternative transfer route remain outside the example.
I would repeat that calculation using your last or expected month of transactions. Count operations, not just revenue. A high-turnover consultancy with a few payments can have simpler banking needs than a small store paying many suppliers.
Payroll, cards and team access
Wio's schedule includes one WPS salary file monthly on Essential and three on Grow, with AED 31.50 for each additional file. It also lists free primary and virtual debit-card issuance. The plan comparison includes two users on Essential and ten on Grow.
NEO BIZ advertises WPS salary transfers on its product page. Ask for the complete payroll cost by channel and employee arrangement, rather than assuming every related service is free. Its key facts put conditions on debit-card issuance, including the signing arrangement. Confirm card eligibility before designing the team's spending process around it.
For either bank, test the approval model on paper: can a bookkeeper prepare a payment without releasing it? Who can add a beneficiary? Can the founder revoke access without changing everybody's login? Do not share one login just because the company is small.
Apps, support and accounting integrations
Both providers present digital business-banking journeys. I am not assigning a winner for app reliability or support response times because those require actual testing. Before committing, ask how to recover access, escalate a blocked payment and reach a human outside your normal working hours.
For accounting, ask for a sample statement/export and confirmation of any connector to your specific accounting product and UAE account type. “Integrates with accounting” can mean a direct feed, a third-party connector or manual file import. Those are different workflows. Check the fields needed for fees, foreign exchange and invoice matching.
I would prioritise reliable reconciliation over a large integration list. The n8n invoicing workflow shows how to think about automation after the financial records are dependable. Keep payment approval and bank credentials outside an improvised AI workflow.
Savings and interest: keep promotions out of the base case
Wio Essential's plan page does not include interest on Saving Spaces; Grow advertises interest subject to its terms. Mashreq's September key facts describe a Pro Plus welcome-interest offer for eligible new accounts over the first 90 days, rather than a permanent return for every customer.
I would compare banking costs without promotional interest first. Then check the applicable currency, balance tiers, eligibility, duration, withdrawal conditions and post-promotion rate. Do not annualise a short welcome offer or treat tax and payroll reserves as money you can lock away indefinitely.
Which would I choose?
- Lean, digital-first startup: Wio Essential is my default, subject to eligibility. Switch that choice to NEO BIZ Pro when a specific operating requirement makes Mashreq the better fit, not for a tiny monthly price difference.
- More team access or frequent SWIFT payments: cost Wio Grow against the corresponding Mashreq plan using actual volumes and FX routes.
- Established company with a stable operating balance: investigate Prime, but include fall-below risk and the value of tied-up cash.
- Cash-heavy, trade-finance or complex-ownership business: request a suitable business-banking proposal rather than forcing the company into a starter digital account.
The Wio Business review explains how I would organise accounts, reserves, cards and payroll. The payments workflow then connects the bank to customer collection and accounting.
After banking is operational, use Ziina vs Tap Payments to evaluate customer collection and payouts. The Dubai hub connects the wider setup sequence. Recheck fees and eligibility before applying; this comparison is decision support, not a guarantee of acceptance.
