Ahrefs is the SEO toolset built on its own crawler — by its account the second most active on the web — which is why its backlink index and keyword database are the ones many specialists trust first. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and Content Explorer cover the core jobs; Ahrefs Webmaster Tools gives site owners a free slice of the audit and backlink data for their own domains.

Where it fits in my work

When the question is "why does this page rank and ours doesn't?", Ahrefs is where I look: who links to it, what terms it owns, what content gap we could fill. For keyword research I find it clearer than Semrush — intent, difficulty and traffic potential on one screen — and the free Webmaster Tools are enough to keep a client site healthy between projects. The data feeds the content plan in Notion and the editorial pipeline behind the blog .

Verdict

Ahrefs is the SEO tool I would keep if I could keep one: the data is trustworthy and the interface gets out of the way. Start with Webmaster Tools or Starter, and pay for Lite when backlink research becomes a regular part of the work.
