Semrush
All-in-one SEO and content marketing toolkit.
Overview
Semrush is the all-in-one SEO and content-marketing toolkit: keyword and competitor research, rank tracking, site audits, backlink analysis, content briefs and, since 2025, AI-search visibility — how brands show up in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews. It is broader than Ahrefs and leans toward marketing teams rather than pure SEO specialists.
Where it fits in my work
Content on this site is planned, not improvised: every article starts as a keyword with measurable demand and a clear intent. Semrush is where that research happens — what people actually search for around a tool or a service, how hard the term is, what the competing pages look like. The audit and rank-tracking side matters on client sites after a rebuild, when a migration can quietly lose rankings. The AI-visibility reports are new and already useful: AI answers are a channel now, and it is worth knowing whether you are in them. I use Ahrefs for the same job when backlink data is the question; the two overlap heavily and most teams only need one.
Key features
Keyword research with intent, difficulty and SERP features Competitor research — organic, paid and traffic estimates Site Audit, Position Tracking and On-Page SEO Checker Content Toolkit — briefs, optimisation and AI writing AI Visibility Toolkit for ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews Local SEO, PPC research and social tools in one account
Best for
Marketing teams and agencies that want research, tracking and content tools in one subscription. Individual builders who mostly need keyword ideas will find the price steep; Ahrefs' Starter plan or free tools cover the basics.
Where it fits in my stack
Semrush → the editorial pipeline that publishes to the blog , Ahrefs for backlink work, Notion for the content plan. It belongs to the deliver-and-improve stage of my stack .
Pros
Breadth — research, audits, tracking and content in one place Strong competitor and intent data AI-search visibility tracking ahead of most rivals Good reporting for client-facing work
Limitations
Expensive, and the useful plans are billed annually at the listed rates Plan structure changes often; limits on projects and tracked keywords bite Backlink index is generally considered weaker than Ahrefs' The interface is dense — there is a learning curve
Pricing
Semrush's pricing page currently lists, billed annually: SEO at $117.33 a month (5 projects, 500 keywords tracked daily); Starter at $165.17 a month (adds AI visibility); Pro+ at $248.17 a month (15 projects, 1,500 keywords); Advanced at $455.67 a month (40 projects, 5,000 keywords); and Enterprise on request. Monthly billing costs more. Plan names and prices change frequently — check the official pricing page .
Verdict
Semrush is the right subscription for a team that treats content as a channel and needs the research, audits and reporting in one place. For a solo builder it is a lot of money for keyword ideas — I would start with Ahrefs' entry plan and upgrade when the reporting matters.
